✦ Myra Gilbert's hand-sewn garments crafted of Japanese tissue paper also include poetry about sewing and childhood experiences, reflecting the artist's memories of growing up among women who sewed. ✦ California-based Studio LP Editions is a division of The Lapis Press, founded in 1984 by artist Sam Francis and a publisher of works by important emerging and established artists, including Martin Puryear, Vija Celmins, Anish Kapoor, Rebecca Horn, Ed Ruscha, Betye Saar, Christopher Wool, and Niki de Saint Phalle. A relatively new initiative, Studio LP Editions is a venue for emerging artists. Mattia Biagi's per sempre was chosen for the inaugural edition. See videos of the artist, who lives and works in Los Angeles, and his bronze sculpture.

✦ Artist Jim Dine collaborated with photographer Diana Michener to produce a limited-edition, 35-page artist book in 2012. The images are by Michener, the poem by Dine. Titled Radiance, the 25-copy lithographically printed book is 10.25" x 8.13". Make inquiries via Tamarind Institute.



✦ Watch the trailer for Art Therapy: The Movie, directed by Alfonso Bui. The documentary presents stories of people who have experienced severe trauma and explores how art therapy is helping them to heal. Among those featured are substance abuse patients in the Bronx, tsunami victims in Japan, orphans in the Dominican Republic, and special needs children in India.

Exhibitions Here and There

✭ In Poughkeepsie, New York, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College celebrates a campus-wide celebration of the sciences with a multimedia exhibition of art related to astronomy. Of the more than 50 works in "Touch the Sky", two are site-specific pieces created for the show: a 23-foot-tall photomural by Mungo Thomson and a 16-foot painting by Laura Battle.

The exhibition, which includes artist books, prints, drawings, paintings, photography, and film, also features the work of these artists: Michael Benson, Matthew Brandt, Vija Celmins, Caleb Charland, Linda Connor, Teresita Fernandez,  Nancy Graves, Sharon Harper, Mishka Henner, David Malin, Chris McCaw, Lisa Oppenheim, Thomas Ruff, Lewis M. Rutherfurd, Kiki Smith, Michelle Stuart, and Penelope Umbrico. View the checklist of artworks. The exhibition continues through August 21.

✭ Opening tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Artists & Makers Studios, Rockville, Maryland, is "Best of the Art Leagues — an Invitational" and "Summer Burners". The former showcases work by 25 juried members of the Art League of Germantown. The latter presents 36 graffiti writers and street artists. Both shows continue through June 23. ✭ A "Summer of Love" is playing out at the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. On view through August 7, the exhibition "Art Lovers" draws from the museum's collection and includes a wide range of selections, from mythological narratives of love to contemporary depictions.

Hilliard University Art Museum, Lafayette, Louisiana, continues through August 20 "Depictions of Louisiana", a show of works from the mid-19th Century to the present. Also using texts from Louisiana literature, the exhibition aims to construct, deconstruct, represent, and interpret the sense of "place" through artistic expression.

✭ On view through August 7 at the Art Institute of Chicago is "Van Dyck, Rembrandt, and the Portrait Print". Spanning five centuries of art-making, the exhibition features approximately 140 prints, including a selection of etchings from Van Dyck's Iconography series.  Included are works by Albrecht Durer, Hendrik Goltzius, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Lievens, Goya, Edgar Degas, Kathe Kollwitz, and Chuck Close. One gallery is devoted to the political role of the portrait print, another to portraits in varied media, such as painted miniatures, wax and marble sculptures, and paintings. A color catalogue (see image below) accompanies the exhibition.

✭ The contemporary sculptural installation And that is no lie (2015), by Bangalore-based artist Sheela Gowda, may be seen through August 21 in the double-height Project Gallery at Perez Art Museum Miami. A selection of exhibition images is available at the exhibition link.
