Saturday Sharing (My Finds Are Yours)

Today's edition of Saturday Sharing tells you where to go for a new series of podcasts from Abbey of the Arts, poets' recitations of memorized poems, an easily accessible list of university press blogs, the many hundreds of thousands of records available online through the Smithsonian Institution, the Sacred Life-Arts site, and a site in the United Kingdom, Love Your Indie, that rewards patrons of independent booksellers.

✦ Christine Valters Paintner of Abbey of the Arts is offering a monthly free podcast, with each offering based on a theme from her Monk Manifesto. The series began in November with the theme of silence; you'll find that podcast here. In addition to her reflections, Paintner provides with each podcast a guided meditation, as well as a recommended song. The podcasts, which are scheduled through May 2012 and address, respectively, the themes of hospitality, community, kinship with Creation, work, Sabbath, and conversion, can be accessed at Paintner's Website or downloaded to mp3 players.

✦ Described as "a sanctuary of spiritual and creative inspiration for women", Sacred Life-Arts offers online spiritual-enrichment classes; a section called the Sanctuary for viewing videos or listening to audio interviews or meditations to inspire creativity and contemplation; a blog; and a Resources section that lists Websites offering inspiration, guidance, and wisdom on spirituality, art and creativity, and writing and education.

✦ The Smithsonian Institution's more than 7.4 million records include hundreds of thousands of images, video and sound files, electronic journals, and other resources from Smithsonian museums, archives, and libraries. Collections may be accessed online alphabetically or via type (books, paintings, photographs, etc.), topic, taxonomy, place, name, culture, language, or datasource, among other options. A recent highlight is the eight-volume collection, "The People of India", which is the subject of this post. If you're new to the Website, watch the tutorial to learn how best to facilitate "one-stop searching".

Frank Giampietro conceived and designed the wonderful online resource Poems by Heart, which is edited by Virginia McLure. You'll find there a series of recitations (mp3 format) of favorite poems, including Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken", Emily Dickinson's "That It Will Never Come Again", Mary Oliver's "Wild Geese", and Lucille Clifton's "Homage to My Hips". The current list of contributors includes, among others, poets JoAnn Balingit, Traci Brimhall, Claudia Emerson, and Robert Pinsky. Each reader explains why he or she likes and has memorized the particular recorded poem.

✦ A brief list of university press blogs is accessible through the University of California Press blog. Take a look; all of the blogs reward browsing.

✦ American independent booksellers/publishers take note: Love Your Indie is a loyalty card scheme for book lovers in the United Kingdom who frequent independent booksellers. Run by a collective of British indie publishers, Love Your Indie offers discounts on purchases at participating shops and a choice of free book following a prescribed amount and number of purchases.

What wonderful finds!

I've already explored a bit of Spiritual Life-Arts and listened to a couple of poems at Poems by Heart -- what a gift!

Thank you.
